Long speech short sense: the problem was the usb chipset of the mainboard 'Intel USB 3.0 (or 3.1) extensible host controller'. If that still doesn't help, you can always use your USB 2.0 ports instead, which usually have better compatibility. The site is MSI, but it the driver should work with other motherboards that use the same Asmedia USB controller (many Asus boards use this).

#UNKNOWN DEVICE ON ASMEDIA USB3.1 EXTENSIBLE HOST CONTROLLER UPDATE#
Does anyone know where I can go to download the latest version? Probably do not need to update the driver but thought I would ask since an older version is now installed. I went to the driver update site at ASUS for my Maximus IX Hero motherboard and cannot find anything regarding subject. My driver update program states the driver is out of date too but cannot install it and times out. It recommends I go to the owner of the product and get the update there. When I click on Subject in the Device Manager and check to see if there are updated drivers, Windows goes to the Internet and attempts to install the driver but always has a time-out and the update fails.
